Notes from Synod (2)

11 07 2009

Just finished a fish supper in Vanbrugh Restaurant. Very frustratingly, I was a nat’s whisker away from eating with the Archbishop of Canterbury (he was just in front of me in the queue) but somebody snatched him away as we put our trays down together.

The late afternoon session focussed on the alternative weekday lectionary and how to encourage giving. All very wholesome stuff and surprisingly interesting, but I’m struggling to pull out any worthwhile quotes. One chap did wrap up the session with a good gag, though: “We’ve heard many depressing figures this afternoon. None more so than Australia 676 for…”

All in all this is not what I expected. For one thing there aren’t anywhere near as many dog collars as I’d expected. Apparently the summer session is always a bit more relaxed than the London ones. It does mean that you get to see the Bishop of Willesden in track-suit bottoms and a t-shirt though.

As with any good Anglican event, the alcohol flows freely. In fact, just after the Archbishop’s Council has delivered its report, us CEYC types are hosting a fringe event. This Synod is our Fifth birthday. Sherry and party rings all round.

I don’t own any track suit bottoms – though I will admit to the tee shirt!
